A garden shredder is very useful in the garden and especially in the spring when you tidy your garden of all of the dead leaves and branches. If you have allot of branches and logs to get rid of then a shredder is essential as it makes it so much quicker and it also turns them into a chip bark that can be easily composted or used around the garden.

There are two main types of garden shredder which are the large shredders that you feed garden waste into and the vacuums that suck up garden debris and shred it. The garden vacuums are great for small and light garden waste such as leaves and small twigs that are on your patio or around your garden as they make it much easier to clean up this garden waste. These are not so good though if you wish to shred large branches and logs and for these you will need one of the large shredders.

These are large and free standing shredders that stand in your garden and will need a container or bag to collect the chippings. These cost more than the vacuums but they can handle much larger pieces of wood and produce some great chippings and they are quicker and quieter than the cheap garden shredders. Bosch are a very popular brand with these large shredders and come highly recommended.

Bosch AXT 2200 HP Silent Garden Shredder
The necessary factor for shredding is motor power. For that reason, all Bosch Quiet Shredders have high-torque "High-Power" motors. They immediately draw in and shred the branches into bits optimal for composting. Which Bosch Quiet Shredder you select will mostly rely on the dimensions of your garden and the thickness of the amassing branches and shrubbery. Fresh, brown earth is the base material of the garden, and you can make it yourself with a Bosch Quiet Shredder.

Some things just put a grin on your face - the 1st time I used a power washer to scrub the terrace was one such occasion.

We've a garden encircled by unpleasant ticklish 'Fire thorn' hedges - that appear to expand at a constantly increasing rate. For me keeping these in check has been a three times a year job making large amounts of green waste which, owing to its really troublesome nature - means hours of further slicing simply to get it in the bags.

It's a weighty machine and certainly looks mechanically powerful. I suspect its fair to claim that small money has been spent on the support frame / wheels / collection bag - but they do their job acceptably well enough. The fun starts when you press the ON button and give it a branch to 'eat'. This is pulled in, munched up, and spat out in tiny chunks into the bag below. There's not very much noise either, as the cutter / crusher isn't spinning at some great rate - just forty revs per minute. It can cope with branches up to 38cm and the mouth opening is proscribed in accordance with this. For two hours I fed the machine with a deluge of different sized branches, often one at a time, but also in pairs and threes.

The machine just grabbed them and champed them all to bits. Phenomenally , it barely looks to be straining in use.

Yes, there's a tiny more noise with a big mouth full, but the tone does not really change. It actually is very inspiring, and given enough branches to shred - the collection bag is shortly filled. It is fantastic what a gigantic pile of prunnings can be reduced to after shredding, and is easy to fantasize this rotting down well after. OK it's not super quick, but with the right system it does is pretty quick. For optimum throughput - give it long branches, guaranteeing there's at least with 6-8 inches of stem for it to get hold of. Remove any offshoots that you cant manually bend to fit the width of the mouth. You shortly get the feel of what's needed and I have amended my pruning methodology to better serve my hungry new pal. The machine is also better at shredding more 'woody' material instead of predominately soft green stuff - so if you only have the latter ( leaves, grass etc ) - look some place else. You can mix it in with the woody stuff though and it appears to work fine.

Bosch AXT Rapid 2200
In selecting this shredder I took in to account that it was given the thumbs up by Which? In Nov 2007, and had a particularly positive write-up on the "fred shed" web site, a first-rate source of independent recommendation. I must commend what Fred claims about keeping the blade pointy. "Take care with what you put in the shredder and particularly don't get ANY soil in it. With the high speed even a tiny amount of soil acts like an abrasive and quickly blunts the blade.". It is well designed and assembled and also extraordinarily robust. The blade wears well ( if you follow the recommendation above and also confirm no stones find their way in to the machine ) and is a bit less expensive than most brands to replace. It is the quietest machine I have used.but doubtless could still provoke the neighbours if run at gauche hours. The smartest thing for me is that it's not susceptible to obstructing.

If used reasonably, with the assistance of the wide prodder, you can simply go full sessions without a blockage.

The collection bag offered as an accessory isn't truly mandatory. A massive plastic crate / storage box does just as well in getting the shredding's to the compost pile. To understand this machine you want to have attempted some of the others.
